language as a navigator

I wonder how language can be used as a navigator. Because I am not so interested in the story told, but more so of what lays underneath. I believe a mentor can navigate a pupil through words towards a place which can not be described by words. I feel it at times, to see and understand more of what lays underneath. It is hard to explain, obviously, but I feel language, our spoken language, can be used to navigate the mind, to lead it towards, not just to describe what is.
